final question # 4

TOPIC: THE KNOWLEDGE - BASED SYSTEMS (KBS)Question # 3: 1. Describe or define KBS.2. Distinguish KBS from MIS.3. Illustrate (give examples) how KBS can improve company's competitive advantage and organizational performance.

Knowledge-Based System is a computer system that is programmed to imitate human problem-solving by means of artificial intelligence and reference to a database of knowledge on a particular subject.

The most important aspect of a knowledge base is the quality of information it contains. The best knowledge bases have carefully written articles that are kept up to date, an excellent information retrieval system (such as a search engine), and a carefully designed content format and classification structure while in MIS, Managers ensure the availability, continuity, and security of data and information technology services in their organizations. In this capacity, they oversee a variety of user services such as an organization’s help desk, which employees can call with questions or problems. MIS directors also may make hardware and software upgrade recommendations based on their experience with an organization’s technology.

For example. Information overload is a critical problem in both military and commercial decision-making processes. Knowledge based systems provide a flexible, user definable and highly scalable solution to these problems by wedding intelligent multi-agent software with a user-focused graphical interface to provide improved decision making in dynamic environments and improved situational awareness. This approach lends itself to many potential applications in both the military and commercial sectors.

Virtual Office easily manage data (emails, contacts, meetings, documents, tasks, ...). Virtual Office have information archival and retrieval system that runs on the latest IT networks and serves the needs of organizations large and small. whereas MIS the manager evaluate the newest and most innovative technologies and determine how the information help their organizations as to increasingly involved with the upkeep. maintenance and security of the networks.

It makes an organization efficient because with it, vital information is at the fingertips of the organization's users. Any user on the IT network can retrieve information from the central storage within a few seconds after making a request.
The original information is never lost, never misfiled and is always available. Multiple users can retrieve the same information simultaneously unlike with paper based manual filing systems in which only one user can have access to a file at any time.
Organizations that are using Virtual Office can never be without it. Through it's use they realize how it makes their job and decision making fast and helps in making their organization save time; time, that normally with a manual filing system is wasted in searching for information that is needed.

question #2-midterm

Research 1 company and describe how they protect their company from internet risks. Also, research for possible risks or dangers and/or impacts of internet - related crimes to a company.

Name: Yokogawa Electric Corporation

Yokogawa Electric Corporation protect their internet from risks by using an enhanced version of the ProSafe®-RS Safety Instrumented System. This new version is smoothly integrated with Yokogawa's latest production control system, CENTUM®VP, and offers improved security and support for Windows Vista. These enhancements strike the optimum balance between improved operational efficiency and safety. it also helps prevent accidents by detecting unusual conditions in plant operations and taking emergency actions such as shutting down the plant. Unlike conventional safety instrumented systems and DCSs, which are regarded as having different roles/functions and operate separately, the operation of ProSafe-RS and CENTUM series can be fully integrated. As a result, ProSafe-RS is held in high regard by users and has been installed in more than 300 projects worldwide since its release.

The danger that one faces by Yokogawa Electric Corporation when browsing in sites with the aforementioned domain clusters is that those sites are more apt to contain malicious code that can infect your computer and launch attacks on other computers. Also, these sites are littered with viruses, or Trojan’s that can create a backdoor on your computer that would allow someone to glean your computer for critical information such as your bank account information, social security number, or other information useful to identity thieves.

question # 1- Midterm

Name: SWREG INC.
SWREG, Inc is owned by Digital River, a trusted publicly traded company in the United States . SWREG,is a customer focused company with a cohesive team of professionals who strive to provide service excellence. The oldest online software store in the world. SWREG®, in existence since 1987, is a valuable service that was created to provide software and shareware authors the most convenient means possible of selling their products online.
SWREG® is one of the most advanced and fastest growing online software processors on the web today. it is a global e-commerce solution. Robust, flexible and customizable features and functionality make it make it easy (and painfree) to build your e-commerce business-all at a great value backed by outstanding service from SWREG.
  • The concept of e-commerce is fast becoming advantageous for both the vendor and consumer in today's fast moving and electronically-connected world.
E-commerce offers advantages that include the ability to expand into global markets with a minimum of expense, thus allowing firms to reach narrow market segments that are geographically scattered.
  • As the Internet is a cost effective medium of delivery, the main advantage of online ecommerce is its cost efficiency. And here's why: Ecommerce decreases the cost of creating, processing, distributing, storing and retrieving paper-based information. .
  • Another major advantage that SWREG companies see is the increase in sales e-commerce brings, and increased sales typically mean increased profits as well.
Yet another advantage of moving a business online is that it allows the flexibility to target market segmentation, which in turn allows companies to focus on a select group of customers, thus having a competitive advantage in giving them what they want and satisfying unique needs.
This benefit ties in with the advantage of 'customer customization," in which the concept of 'built-to-order', allowing for inexpensive customization of products and services and provides a competitive advantage for companies who adapt this strategy.
  • E-commerce marketing also allow for real-time communications and the interchange of data in the supply chain, making the supply chain more effective.
By having better visibility across the supply chain, company inventory levels can be reduced, as supplies are more predictable. With lower inventory levels, costs can once again be automatically be decreased.
  • Lastly, this sort of ecommerce also allows information to flow freely between cooperating businesses, making it easier and simpler for organizations to share information.
It is important to consider, however, that buyers or customers also benefit from doing their buying online. As sales opportunities expand for the vendor, they also increase the buying opportunities and power for the buyer. Many buyers choose to shop online as it provides them with an almost unlimited variety of choices from many different products and services from a wider variety of sellers.

McDonalds Corporation is a corporate member of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) and a member of our local chapter in the Chicagoland area. TL9000 Diversity Best Practices Committee, helping to write industry guidelines. Our initiative will continue to grow through our outreach activities, our strategic alliances and sharing of qualified diversity suppliers with our key customers, our involvement in local and national groups and associations, and our corporate commitment, namely "It is the right thing to do for our company and for our community

IT Directions
"They are following the US market in terms of growth, so this year, they will continue with the specific projects that have been started last year and the consolidation of the different applications, so that the stores can access the applications using the Internet.Expounding more on the network consolidation, They described that the store network is a project that allows the company-owned stores to be connected either via broadband or frame-relay. This allows the company to retrieve some information from and to the stores from the Help Desk for updates of the pricing, downloading of memos etc., as well as email exchange of information from the head office and suppliers. Easy communication provided by network consolidation also covers the local announcements from the head office to the stores. The network consolidation also allows the deployment of applications faster.
Another area for IT expansion is the consolidation of applications, focusing more on the transmission service. This works when a branch finished a store day and consolidation of all the information takes place from the store to the head office. With the store network in place, the time in generating the reports will also be faster.

In the Philippines, the company began in 1945 with a single store owned by Mariano Que. He named it after Mercury, the messenger of the gods in Roman mythology and whose staff, the caduceus, is sometimes used as a symbol of medicine.

In 1945, Mercury Drug cut packaged bulk items into individual pieces. It was called "tingi-tingi" or the selling-by-piece-retail method.

Question # 3

Justify or contradict these trends by citing examples.
1) Mis users are more knowledgeable. I consider my self as a best example because as of now I got of informations about MIS that i could use in applying in different aspects.
2) More power is available to the users.you have the power to decide especially in managerial decision making. Example: For the managers, it helps in conceptualizing in making decisions that nobody could influence them in pursuing their management capacity.
3) Resistance to the implementation of emerging MIS subsiding. Example:there are bank institutions who have a subsidize/parent company, so when they are implementing new rules and regulation it can easily send it to them for them to be aware or be inform. 4) Connectitivity. They can easily furnished information such as call center are the best example.
5) Mis is becoming one of the primary of increasing productivity. Example: The company particular in the production area, the use of computerized and hi-tech equipment for faster and quality output.
6) Companies are using mis as a competitive strategy. As of now, MIS is being use mostly by companies like Matsuhita company, a big company that need MIS especially in sales report making. They pass their sales report to their sister company if they have so that they could gather more information needed by the company in managing the work and their operation as well as helping in solving their problems.
8) The end user is encoming the focus of MIS activity. Once you now have the knowledge of MIS in how to use it properly, it makes as a hobby to your life that you can use anytime. Example those IT teacher that make MIS as a hobby they can use it as a extra income by teaching those who want to have an extra information about the subject.

Question#.2

How can the manager and employees make use of information as a strategic/competitive advantage over other competitors?

Information about the present or future can provide search marketers with a competitive advantage. This is true not just for immediate competitive intelligence and the incremental power that a real-time campaign or bidding system can provide by analyzing data as it happens, but also for the understanding of trends that indicate where the search engines are going, which can help you plan at a macro level.Knowledge is the ultimate competitive advantage only if understood from an action-oriented perspective. All the information technologies and data cannot assure competitive advantage in the long-term, nor do decisions that are made - if made at all - drawing upon insights hidden in information and data. Only translating information and decisions into actionable value propositions can assure competitive advantage. Hence, in this perspective, knowledge lies in action: in effective utilization of data and information resources for actionable decisions and, most importantly, in execution. As elaborated earlier, business managers need to define and continuously refine their business value propositions to ensure that they are not marginalized by radical discontinuous change. Therefore, this knowledge management strategy and its execution with the aid of information, communication and collaboration technologies can provide a greater chance at being 'great' than is otherwise possible.
